2. Nativity Fort

Fortín de la Natividad

Upon passing the Matadero Bridge one comes upon the Nativity Fort, a small fort built in the XVII century (probably after 1616), that could house only 12 soldiers and four pieces of artillery.  It was the main defense for the city from the West and one of the few constructions with that function.  During the 1950s and 1960s Ornato Municipal carried out several reconstruction projects on the fort without documenting the changes.  The southern wall is probably the oldest.

It is very possible that Henry Morgan and his pirates entered the city crossing the Matadero Bridge attacking the small Nativity Fort.
