16.Convent of Santo Domingo

16. Santo Domingo Convent Complex

Convento de Santo DomingoThe convent of the Dominican friars was one of the smallest and most centric of the city.  It was founded in 1571 and it was built in phases.  In 1577 the building was still made of wood and tiles with a carved cane fence.  The masonry construction that was begun at the beginning of the XVII century was a solid masonry and brick construction that resisted the 1621 earthquake very well.  It had one cloister, of which the patio was surrounded by a gallery.  The convent’s façade was oriented towards the North just like the Cathedral; its Western façade ran along the Santo Domingo road.
