10. Main Plaza

Plaza MayorThe Main Plaza was the center for various social, religious, economic, political and cultural activities.  Slightly irregular, it was neither square nor rectangular, and measured roughly 69 x 57 meters.  For a city of the importance of Panama, the Main Plaza was relatively small.  Towards 1600 the northern side was extended, thus gaining 500 square meters in that direction.  It is still possible to see the cathedral and the town hall on the eastern side of the square; on the other three sides there were houses with entry hallways.
