Metallic materials

tratamiento metales

The treatment of metallic materials corresponds to a high percentage of the objects that are sent by the archaeology department.  The condition in which these objects are found severely complicates the conservation work given their fragile state provoked by the site’s high level of salinity.
These objects, which correspond to Colonial times, make up a group that is distinguished by its variety, quantity and historic importance.  Among them we can mention: copper, silver, iron, gold, pewter and lead, as well as their alloys.  For this group of objects different restoration methods have been developed and put into practice when applying cleaning techniques, including electrolysis.  These treatments for the elimination of chlorides in the metals, allow the release of hydrogen, which favors cleaning by helping to release the dirt that tends to be attached to the archaeological object, thus avoiding the use of mechanical cleaning methods.
